Exciting news! Darla Sims has created a crochet version of Elizabeth Zimmermann's classic knitted Baby Surprise Jacket - and she's added lots of fun variations! Now you can crochet a surprise sweater and add stripes, ruffles, a hood, a collar, or other sweet details.
Like the original Baby Surprise Jacket, the crochet pattern is worked in one easy piece, then folded and quickly stitched to create its final shape. These 8 darling cardigans can be crocheted in sizes 6-, 12-, and 24-months, using medium weight yarn Basic Sweater, Hooded Sweater, Ruffled Sweater, Bobbled Sweater, Picot Sweater, Ribbed Collar Sweater, V-Neck Sweater, and Basic Buttoned Sweater.

It says there are "8" sweater patterns in here, but it is really just 1 with 8 variations. The variations are: hood, collar, ribbed cuffs, v neck, buttons or ties, bobbles, ruffle trim, or picot edge. The sweater part mostly stays the same and is in worsted weight yarn, which looks like cheap acrylic to me. The one on the cover is the most attractive & the ones inside look kind of tacky & with bad color choices (brown bobbles that look like.... food or something worse? Eh). Because of this I chose to do EZ's knit version which I think looks a lot better & more refined. But now that I finished it that thing was a beast and took forever, so I wished I did this one just in colors/yarn I liked. That's what I get for being a snob right? Like baby is going to know it's an EZ sweater knit in Noro! For alternatives Jenny King's version on Ravelry is $6.99 and if you knit to buy Elizabeth Zimmerman's book that has it is $14+ so this is a decent deal especially since you can just make it over and over for everyone's baby. I like the simple style the best even if it is $9. It's a large pamphlet like you can buy at the crafts store, not a "book".

Surprise Crochet Sweaters for Baby eBook Darla Sims Reviews
It is basically only one pattern. Just a little variantation. but very cute and very easy. (I am an experienced knitter but a begginer crochetter). I changed it a little and made a sweater for my doughter. I am very sutisfied by the outcome
Nice approach to baby sweaters. Much more expensive than purchasing on specialty store website. Patterns are basically the same sweater in different colors and trims.
Cute little jackets.
I do however like some other crochet baby books I have better, instructions are better etc. Although I do love the one piece of the projects. But sometimes in my case anyway, you get to work it better by all the different pieces.
I have already made the knit version of this sweater and this crochet version is so much easier and quicker. Worked up in just 3 short evenings...two for crocheting and one for finishing. It's also a great yarn stash buster.
Patterns for crocheted sweaters for kids tend to be hard to come by and patterns that would be warm and comfy even more so. This book has it! Cute as the dickens, each pattern, while based on the same shape, is ingenious, pretty (or cute for boys), easy to understand and a fast work up. What more could you ask? As a knitter who has made Elizabeth's Surprise jacket, I love the opportunity to use the technique in crochet, which is my go to method when I need to hurry. I'm glad i got this one! Another added advantage is that you can use up your small balls of leftover worsted weight yarn. Could it get better? I don't think so.
I have already knitted the Surprise jacket by Elizabeth Zimmerman. But I want to try and crochet one. I think using worsted weight makes the jackets stiff. To get the correct gauge I have to go down a size my stitching is loose. I am going to use DK or sport weight yarn and make the next size up.
I have been crocheting from 50 years, and I find that designers take the easy way out and always recommend worsted weight yarn for clothing. I gave it 3 stars for that reason, design wise and technique wise the book is fine.
My recommendation for the author/designer = go sport weight or DK.
